Counselling Skills (Intermediate)
Empathy is the ability to understand the perceptions of others and to identify with their emotions. This forms the foundation for successful counselling and the development of healthy human relationships. In working with community and having to mediate between various parties, IRCC members have to possess a strong ability to empathise. They need to be able to capture and relate to the emotional nuances of the people involved. Just as importantly, they need to be able to communicate this empathic understanding accurately so the parties involved feel identified with, and hence, less defensive and more open to working towards a positive conflict resolution.
