CE Champs @ Innova JC (Racial Harmony Day Celebrations)
On 20th July 2012, Director and staff from OnePeople.sg were invited to attend Racial Harmony Day 2012 at Innova Junior College. Racial Harmony Day at IJC is celebrated both to reinforce Character and Citizenship Education in the school and as the culmination of their Community Engagement Champions (CE Champs) Programme.
From March – June 2012, OnePeople.sg piloted the CE Champs programmes for Innova Junior College. Programmes conducted include a visit to the Internal Security Department (ISD), Explorations in Ethnicity (EIE) basic Programme, Community Involvement Programme (CIP) Workshop and a youth dialogue with community leaders and Brandtology staff. Through these programmes, students were able to better understand race relations in Singapore and enhance appreciation of our multi-cultural society. The dialogue with community leaders and Brandtology gave them insights into problems faced at the grassroots levels as well as the impact of social media on race relations.
OnePeople.sg hopes that the CE Champs Programme will be able to groom student leaders at the pre-tertiary and tertiary levels to be the “voice of harmony” in their schools and community. Participants from the pilot run of the programme felt that it has equipped them with greater knowledge and an appreciation of our multi-cultural society. It has also further honed their leadership and project planning skills. This will allow them to come up with projects that can benefit the community in future.
