National Day Celebrations

OnePeople.sg celebrated its first National Day Celebrations on 7 August 2009, together with about 80 multi-racial children from Jamiyah Children’s Home, Ramakrishna Mission Boys' Home, Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home and Kids United Home. To signify the celebrations, most of them were dressed in red or white – the colours on our national flag.

The event kicked off with a robust community drumming circle with children beating their musical instruments to the sound of the bigger drums from One HeartBeat. Music was definitely a way of to conveying how harmony can be achieved when we all play as ONE. To get the childrens’ off their chairs to dance the SB Vibrant Line Dance Troupe performed the “Go Go Stomp” and guided the children with all smiles to dance along. A short 3min video was screened where the children watched “My Home”, featuring the pledge moment competition. Questions pertaining to the pledge and its significance were asked and the children answered all correctly, much to the astonishment to all adults present!

With full assistance from the Circus Outreach team, children had a chance to try their hands on some juggling tricks.  It was indeed a heart-warming moment to see the smiles and laughter on children having lots of fun with others from different races, a rare chance for some of them.

The programme came to an end with all the children and staff singing the national anthem and reciting the pledge. The children quickly gathered around the cake to celebrate Singapore’s 44th birthday and to tuck in to a hearty dinner to commemorate OPSG’s first National Day celebrations. Certainly, a memorable event!
