Our Freekicks football training programme organised by OnePeople.sg and Central Singapore in collaboration with Global Football Academy has been growing from strength to strength. Since its inception on 6 April 2008, the programme has reached out to multi-racial young players between 7 to 15 years old who are passionate about football and are keen to forge friendships with other races.
|
The aims of this programme are:
- To foster friendships among different ethnic groups
- To inculcate and nurture racial harmony values among participants to embrace, understand and appreciate our multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society
- To synergise the efforts of all partners towards building a cohesive society
To further emphasise these aims, integrated racial harmony programmes such as visits to ethnic institutions, multi-cultural workshops and community engagement events are organized by OnePeople.sg, Central Singapore CDC and the Self-Help Groups.
Freekicks provide both technical trainings and fun activities for our players to learn and grow in both football skills and better appreciation of Singapore’s diverse culture. In the recent 5V5 Soccer Tournament 2009 held at Tampines Safra which was organized by Asia Football Group, our players played well against local and regional football players. They had demonstrated strong teamwork during the game and came in second for the under 10 age group and third in the under 12 age group. It was a fulfilling and enriching experience for these young players.
Most of our players are from the lower income families and they had benefited greatly from the freekicks programme, not only in term of football skills, but also in sportsmanship and self-esteem. OnePeople.sg also involved the players in our National Orange Ribbon Celebrations 2009 and Onekidz programme. These programmes provide a learning platform for them to understand the various festivals and cultures in our diverse society. Moving forward, our players are training hard for this year Mayor’s Challenge Shield football competition 2010. We are optimistic they will perform just as well, if not better, for the Mayor’s Challenge Shield.
One of our Freekicks boys is proudly featured on the Central Singapore CDC Voices.
