The HarmonyWorks! Workshop Series © (Secondary)

 

Stimulating as the flavours of our local delight ‘Rojak', The HarmonyWorks! Workshop Series – 1 Rojak engages participant learning through games, videos and classroom activities and in the process, enable them to appreciate and embrace diversity as well as grasp the realities of living in a multi-racial and multi-religious society like Singapore.

The HarmonyWorks! Workshop Series – 1 Rojak is an interactive three-hour workshop specially catered for secondary school students with the aim of enhancing cultural competence and cultivating multi-racial and multi-cultural mindsets that would encourage deeper interaction and better understanding amongst the various ethnic communities in Singapore.

Explorations in Ethnicity

 

The Explorations in Ethnicity (EiE) programme, targeted at post-Secondary youths and adult volunteers, provides a platform for stimulating and facilitating honest, open and unreserved sharing and discourse on ethnicity in a multi-racial setting. Participants undergo a journey of self-discovery and exploration that open their minds to the nuances and challenges of living in multi-racial and multi-cultural Singapore.

CampTeen: Youth Racial Harmony Ambassadors Programme

 

Organised by OnePeople.sg, CampTeen: Youth Racial Harmony Ambassadors Programme is held in November annually, where secondary youth leaders undergo a 4D3N residential programme to hone cross cultural understanding and initiate leadership and action among our youth in the promotion of racial harmony and social cohesion.


Participants of CampTeen 2008 had an exciting opportunity to experience working and learning with students from various secondary schools and institutes in a multi-cultural and multi-racial setting. Students experienced an amazing race across Singapore 's unique ethnic enclaves in an amazing race, multi-ethnic treats, cultural dance, team-strategic games, outdoor adventure, campfire and more. CampTeen 2008 Finale showcased their creative talents and even witnessed the 200 multi-racial youths working hand in hand in creating a Singpaore Record: The Singapore's Largest Paper Ball Mosaic .

National Orange Ribbon Celebrations Finale: The HarmonyWorks! Conference 2008

 

The HarmonyWorks! Conference is OnePeople.sg's flagship youth programme targeted at students from the Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges (JC), Institute of Technical Educations (ITE), Polytechnics, Madrasahs and International Schools.

This year, the conference acted as a platform for the Finale of the month long Orange Ribbon Racial Harmony Celebrations organised by OnePeople.sg, the Self-Help groups, CDCs, People's Association and MCYS.

The conference provided a platform for students to gather insights, views and opinions on inter-racial and inter-religious issues in Singapore from academics, proponents of inter-faith work and grassroots leaders.

The theme for this year's conference is “Beyond Tolerance: Embracing Diversity” and was held at Republic Polytechnic on the 26th July. 400 youth participants from various institutions engaged in discussions on the current trends and issues relation to racial harmony during the conference. More than 150 students from Republic Polytechnic were involved in organising this year's conference.

Ship for South East Asian Youth Programme 2007

 

The Ship for South East Asian Youth Programme 2007 (SSEAYP 2007) was held from 22 October to 12 December 2007 where some 300 ASEAN youth participants made institutional visits during their stopover in Singapore.

OnePeople.sg hosted the SSEAYP participants on the theme of “Cross Cultural Understanding” on 9 November 2007. 45 of the ASEAN youth participants participated in this cross cultural dialogue session.

It was a fruitful discussion where our four panelists, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Member of Parliament for Hong Kah GRC, Mr Michael Palmer, Member of Parliament for Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC, Mr Mohamed Nasim, Vice Chairman of TRUST Central Committee of the Central Singapore Community Development Council, and Assistant Professor Daniel Goh, Sociology Don of the National University of Singapore shared personal insights and perspectives on racial harmony with the ASEAN youth participants . Dialogue Session with Asia 21 Fellows

 

On 5 October 2007 , a group of Asia 21 Fellows hailing from countries such as China, Philippines, Taiwan, USA and Vietnam visited OnePeople.sg. They were in Singapore to attend the 2007 Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit held at the Shangri-La Hotel from 5 to 7 October 2007 .

Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore District and Chairman of OnePeople.sg, engaged the Fellows in an invigorating discussion about the liberties, tolerance, inclusiveness, minority rights, and the history and future of Singapore's race relations at OnePeople.sg's Youth Hub.

Talk on Jainism and Zoroastrianism at AJC

 

On 14 July 2008 , OnePeople.sg, in collaboration with the Inter-religious Organization (IRO) supported a talk organised by Anderson Junior College on Jainism and Zoroastrianism. The speakers were Mr Ashvin Desai, Assistant Treasurer and Executive Council Member of the IRO, who spoke on Jainism and Mr Rustom Ghadiali, the President of the IRO, who spoke on Zoroastrianism.

The speakers addressed an audience of 1700 junior college students between the ages of 17-18 over a two day period. They provided students with a brief overview of the basic tenets and principles of their respective religious faiths. The speeches were followed by a Q & A session where students had an opportunity to have their queries answered and learn more about specific aspects of Jainism and Zoroastrianism. The event was part of Racial Harmony Day celebrations and helped create greater understanding and respect for the different religions in Singapore.

Conversation about Singapore Multiculturalism with International Student Researchers

5 student researchers from the Gyeong Sang National University of Korea engaged in a dialogue with Mr Zainudin Nordin, Chairman of OnePeople.sg and Mayor of Central Singapore District on 31 July 2008 at OnePeople.sg. The dialogue was organised by OnePeople.sg as an aspect of the Global Pioneer Program's field study program. The students formed team ‘Cocktail', one of 20 teams who were undertaking field studies related to their major study with selected teams producing a report on their experiences. Team ‘Cocktail' focused on Multicultural Education in Singapore and Malaysia.

‘Cocktail' approached Onepeople.sg, National Commission for UNESCO, People's Association and Trust Central to help them with their study through field visits and interviews. OnePeople.sg invited Mr Zainudin Nordin for an interview with the team. Mr Zainudin Nordin enlightened the students on the state of racial harmony in Singapore and Singapore 's success as multicultural society. Furthermore, he touched upon the role of OnePeople.sg in promoting racial harmony. The conversation was an opportunity for the student researchers to understand racial relations in Singapore and examine it as an example for addressing race relations in Korea .
