Singapore Racial and Religious Harmony Marathon Relay

OnePeople.sg and the Sikh Welfare Council joined hands for the very first time to organise the Singapore Racial and Religious Harmony Marathon Relay, an overnight islandwide run from 27- 28 October 2007. The Singapore Racial and Religious Harmony Marathon relay aims to strengthen the social fabric of our society, foster solidarity among our multi-ethnic and multi-religious groups and drive home the message of eternal vigilance for our continued success and stability.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Second Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts, was the Guest of Honor for the event , leading the first sector of the run, along with Mayor of Central Singapore District and Chairman of OnePeople.sg, Mr Zainudin Nordin. The event commenced with a welcome ceremony and a short tour of an exhibition on the Sikh religion and multi cultural practices at the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sikh Temple .
 
Following the Certificate presentation and recital of the Declaration of the Racial and Religious Harmony pledge, the party of runners in the first leg of the relay flagged off from the temple at 7.30pm . Runners visited and received blessings from various religious institutions along the route such as Princep St Presbyterian Church, Sri Krishnan Temple (also hosted by Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple) and Masjid Sultan ( Muscat Street ).

More than 1,000 multi-Racial and multi-religious participants from the Self-Help Groups, Community Development Councils, People's Association, Inter Racial and Religious Confidence Circles (IRCCs), Inter Religious Organisations (IROs) and multi-religious institutions took part this inaugural event, which concluded with a bang on Sunday 28 October at 10.30am at The Katong Sikh Temple, Wilkinson Road.
