Panel Discussion on “Cross Cultural Understanding” for ASEAN youth participants of SSEAYP 2007

The Ship for South East Asian Youth Programme 2007 (SSEAYP 2007) was held from 22 October 2007 to 12 December 2007. During this period, the ship visited five of the ten ASEAN countries namely Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. About 300 SSEAYP participating youth make institutional visits during their stopover in Singapore and these institutional visits form the foundation for the discussion topics that the participating youth will deliberate on board the ship, Nippon Maru.

OnePeople.sg, hosted the institutional visit on the theme, “Cross Cultural Understanding” on 9 November 2007 , for ASEAN youth participants of the Ship for South East Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP) 2007.

OnePeople.sg's Management Committee Members, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Member of Parliament for Hong Kah GRC, and Mr Michael Palmer, Member of Parliament for Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC hosted a panel discussion on the topic, “Cross Cultural Understanding”. Joining Mr Zaqy and Mr Palmer as panellists was Mr Mohamed Nasim, Vice Chairman of TRUST Central Committee of the Central Singapore Community Development Council, and Assistant Professor Daniel Goh, Sociology Don of the National University of Singapore.

 

Following a presentation on ‘Grassroot Efforts in Managing Race Relations' by A/P Daniel Goh, the four panellists shared their personal insights and experiences with the audience, which enabled the participating youth of SSEAYP 2007 to gain a multi-faceted understanding of Singapore's multi-culturalism from the community and academic perspectives. The audiences from diverse backgrounds were also eager to pose questions to the panel in the Q & A session. At the end of the session, the youth participants from various ASEAN countries went away with a clearer picture of the efforts in promoting harmonious racial and ethnic relations in Singapore.
