Are we xenophobic?

What will it take for new citizens and permanent residents to be truly accepted in our country? Can we live comfortably with foreigners in our midst? Guests-Kirpal Singh, Political Observer from the Singapore Management University, Michael Heng, board member of OnePeople.sg, a community organization focused on strengthening race relations in Singapore and has recently begun looking into foreign-local integration and William Zhu, a new citizen of about 5 years and a volunteer with Hua Yuan General Association of New Immigrants from China.

To promote understanding and importance of racial and religious harmony to more young children in school, 16 year old Estee Leong, from Raffles Institution, together with three other friends wrote and designed a fiction book which teaches children to say "no to racism". Estee and her friends hope that the book can be published so that primary school students can be educated on the ill effects of racism. Estee is hoping to tap on the Harmony fund to achieve this purpose.

More than 20,000 new citizens have completed the Singapore Citizenship Journey (SCJ) since it was launched two years ago. Under the programme, those between the age of 16 to 60 years old will have gone to the National Museum and Parliament House. One project that is supported by the Community Integration Fund (CIF) which was launched in 2009 is CampTeen, organized by OnePeople.sg.

The national body that promotes racial harmony, OnePeople.sg is working with a local research institute to come out with a study to gauge racial harmony in Singapore. The survey which involved 4,500 Singaporeans started in the middle of last year and is expected to end this year. Chairman OnePeople.sg, Mr Zainudin Nordin commented that the survey evaluates and gauge the success of future intervention to build racial harmony in Singapore.

5,000 leaders undergo training to help preserve harmony

Around 5,000 community leaders have undergone various training run by OnePeople.sg for the past five years to preserved racial harmony in Singapore. They, among others learn how to identify issues that can bring about racial conflict and how to solve such conflict. Besides education and training programmes, OnePeople.sg also organizes the yearly Orange Ribbon Walk.

From social service centre to bringing harmony

Frustrated with train congestion, a polytechnic student made racial comments on his Facebook and Twitter, and was immediately lambasted by net users last year. Following the incident, OnePeople.sg, a national body with the aim of preserving racial harmony, invited the student to attend a programme to discuss racial issues. This is one of various effort organized by OnePeople.sg to face the challenges from adult social media.

200 students from 30 schools participated in a racial harmony camp

Close to 200 students from 30 local, international and religious schools participated in a racial harmony camp lasting 4 days 3 nights, where they learn how to deal with racist comments and disputes on the internet. During the camp, these 13 to 16 years old students recognize the importance of racial harmony through activities, games and seminars. A student who was interviewed voiced out that he will not tolerate online racism. Chairman Mr Zainudin Nordin insisted that all should be responsible for their own comments and should be very tactful for what is to be posted on social media platforms. The Finale was completed with the unveiling of the “Heart of Diversity”; a platform where the youths expressed their thoughts on racial harmony.

Camp to advocate and understanding of communities and religions

Close to 200 teenagers of various nationalities and religions came together to share and learn about one another’s culture and religion in a four day camp called, Campteen 2012, organized by OnePeople.sg. The students were invited to visit Malay Heritage Centre (TWM), Buangkok Village, Philippine Embassy and Eurasian Association to learn about different cultures, ethnicities and religions of various communities.

The community self-help groups came together on Tuesday in a show of unity for a combined National Day Observance Ceremony. Joining in the celebrations were the heads of the various ethnic self help groups - Chairman of SINDA, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Chairman of Yayasan MENDAKI, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Chairman of CDAC, Gan Kim Yong,President of the Eurasian Association Benett Theseira and Chairman of OnePeople.sg, Encik Zainudin Nordin. More than 100 staff, beneficiaries and volunteers took part in cultural activities such as ketupat-making, rangoli colouring and performances held at OnePeople.Sg at Lorong 1 Toa Payoh yesterday.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said recent incidents such as derogatory online posts reported in the media show that racial and religious issues can be sensitive and emotional. Mr Heng made these points at the Racial Harmony Day celebrations at Innova Junior College. At the event, he launched a montage of pictures on IJC Community Harmony Day which was produced by the students and an alumni of IJC, Mr Lai Jun Wei, under the Community Engagement Leadership Programme (CELP). IJC launched the pilot CLEP project four months ago together with National Education Unit of MOE and OnePeople.Sg to encourage students to be more active with the community. Director of OnePeople.Sg, Mr Ramesh Ganeson, said 'students attend four months training with them to learn about various cultures in Singapore, leadership skills, stereotype effect and prejudice towards society'.
