National Day Celebrations 2011

OnePeople.sg celebrated our National Day Celebrations on 8 August 2011 at Christalite Methodist Home. With a 200-resident population, this home is a haven for the socially disadvantaged. As part of our continuous efforts to reach out to the community, we wanted to celebrate our National Day in a meaningful and significant way so as to contribute back to the nation.

We started off with serving afternoon tea-break to the old folks. We had catered for some local delicacies such as vadai, otak-otak and red bean pau. After the hearty refreshments, the old folks were treated to an upbeat community drumming by the youth volunteers from South East Community Development Council. Music was a way to say that harmony can be achieved when we all play as ONE. All of them enjoyed the music and it was heartening when we saw them singing along too! After that, Mr Ramesh Ganeson, Director of OnePeople.sg gave his welcome address to the residents of Christalite Methodist Home. He thanked the home for giving us this opportunity and wished all of them good health, happiness and peace.

Following that, we sang the national anthem and recited the pledge to commemorate our National Day celebrations. We even had a cake to celebrate Singapore’s 46th birthday. Some of the old folks joined us to cut the cake for their contributions to the nation are never forgotten. After that, we distributed the cakes and took the opportunity to interact with the old folks.

It was indeed a sightful moment to see the smiles on their faces. It was heartening for staff of OnePeople.sg as it added to our fulfillment for the good deed. Certainly, a memorable event!

National Day Celebrations

OnePeople.sg celebrated its first National Day Celebrations on 7 August 2009, together with about 80 multi-racial children from Jamiyah Children’s Home, Ramakrishna Mission Boys' Home, Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home and Kids United Home. To signify the celebrations, most of them were dressed in red or white – the colours on our national flag.

The event kicked off with a robust community drumming circle with children beating their musical instruments to the sound of the bigger drums from One HeartBeat. Music was definitely a way of to conveying how harmony can be achieved when we all play as ONE. To get the childrens’ off their chairs to dance the SB Vibrant Line Dance Troupe performed the “Go Go Stomp” and guided the children with all smiles to dance along. A short 3min video was screened where the children watched “My Home”, featuring the pledge moment competition. Questions pertaining to the pledge and its significance were asked and the children answered all correctly, much to the astonishment to all adults present!

With full assistance from the Circus Outreach team, children had a chance to try their hands on some juggling tricks.  It was indeed a heart-warming moment to see the smiles and laughter on children having lots of fun with others from different races, a rare chance for some of them.

The programme came to an end with all the children and staff singing the national anthem and reciting the pledge. The children quickly gathered around the cake to celebrate Singapore’s 44th birthday and to tuck in to a hearty dinner to commemorate OPSG’s first National Day celebrations. Certainly, a memorable event!

The Orange Ribbon Celebrations in Singapore

The Orange Ribbon Celebrations in Singapore was initiated by the Central Singapore District in 2006. The month-long celebrations in July promoted the understanding and appreciation of Singapore’s rich ethnic and cultural heritage to residents, with the ideal of building trust.

The success of the Orange Ribbon Celebrations at district level prompted PA’s Deputy Chairman, Mr Lim Boon Heng, to moot the idea of a national-level racial harmony celebration.

In 2008, the Orange Ribbon Celebrations was launched as a national initiative spearheaded by OnePeople.sg together with the 5 Community Development Councils (CDCs), Self-Help Groups and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Ministry of Education (MOE).

The Orange Ribbon

orange ribbon

Since the 1990s, the Orange Ribbon has been adopted by countries and groups of individuals as the symbol of harmony, equality, freedom and universal brotherhood.

The United Nations adopts the Orange Ribbon to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In Australia, the Orange Ribbon is the symbol for the Living in Harmony programme, which promotes multiculturalism and cultural diversity throughout the country.

Orange Ribbon Walk

This year, the Orange Ribbon Celebrations is holding a mass walk. With its theme "Regardless of Race, Language or Religion", the Walk aims to use the essence of the national pledge to further enhance and build cohesion among our multi-cultural, multi-national, multi-racial and multi-religious communities.
