The Media Appreciation Course provides an insight to the media mentality and its impact on race relations and enables participants to understand the New Media and its role in race relations. Various types of media communication tools – Broadcast, print, electronic are examined, to provide an overview of the media scene.
This 1 day course provides IRCC members with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills to be able to mediate issues on the ground between groups of other ethnic origin or faith.
Understanding the various media communication tools, strategic communications and communication techniques will be the key to handling and leveraging on the media in dealing with inter-ethnic conflicts. Participants of the course will understand how to approach journalists and ways to manage the Media during a crisis, which involves taking initiative in defining issue publicly, treating the media as potential ally, putting the crisis in context of overall marketing position and following the facts with emotional appeal. Ways of optimising media opportunities and minimising the risks of delivering the wrong message will also be explored.
The course also covers specific media situations such as phone / email interview, spontaneous interview, formal interview, forum / panel discussion and press conference. Participants will also have a go at crafting their own Key Messages as a hands-on exercise and discuss issues brought up in case studies such as Seditious tract duo who were jailed, the AWARE Saga and the teen racist blogger.
